Also known as a “tooth colored filling”, composite fillings are common procedures to treat cavities or tooth decay. Fillings can also be used to treat chipped teeth, spaces, or discolorations.

Cosmetic dentistry can be used for subtle changes or major repairs. Cosmetic Dentistry is usually performed because of discoloration, chipped teeth, misshapen or missing teeth, or to repair gaps.

Also referred to as a “cap”, a crown helps restore esthetics, form, and function to a tooth that has lost significant amounts of tooth structure due to a large cavity or fracture

When a cavity or fracture extends to the nerve of the tooth causing constant throbbing discomfort, a root canal allows us to remove the infected nerve and save the hard tooth structure.

A dental extraction is the removal of a tooth, generally because the tooth has significant decay or damage and cannot be saved.

A dental implant is a screw that is placed into your jaw to hold a replacement tooth. Dental implants are an ideal option for people in good general oral health who have lost a tooth or teeth due to periodontal disease, an injury, or any other reason.

We offer multiple options for teeth whitening:
1. Professional in-office whitening is a popular option to give you immediate effects.
2. Custom trays made to fit your teeth used with our prescription strength whitening gel offers a more powerful and effective treatment than your local drug store with the at-home convenience.
3.Our prefilled whitening trays offer a simple and fast solution on the go or as a gift.

A dental emergency is a situation that requires prompt attention from a dental professional. At our office, we understand that you cannot always plan when you will need our care.

Also referred to as a nightguard, bite guard, or bite splint, an occlusal guard is a removable appliance that fits over your upper or lower teeth. It helps prevent damage to your teeth that can be caused by grinding and clenching, a destructive oral habit also known as bruxism.

Dentures are removable tooth prosthetics designed to look and function like natural teeth. Partial dentures are a natural-looking replacement for one or more missing teeth.

The patient takes a prescribed medication to bring them to a sleep-like level of consciousness.

Nitrous Oxide sedation, also known as “laughing gas” is commonly used to make treatment more comfortable.

Cleaning & Prevention

Preventative care is the foundation of dentistry. The American Dental Association recommends visiting your dentist regularly – usually about twice yearly – for full cleanings, examinations, and consultations for potential treatment. Professional dental cleanings help remove built-up plaque that is not removable using conventional brushing and flossing. Often, dentists are also capable of identifying potential problems that patients are not yet able to see or feel. When you maintain regular preventative dental appointments, you can stave off decay and gum disease, as well as identify the beginnings of oral health problems before they become severe.

Are Americans less and less likely to visit the dentist as they age? Data from the Centers for Disease Control reports that only 57% of Americans over age 65 visited the dentist in 2010. That compares to about 61% of adults under age 65 and about 79% of children ages 2 to 17. Nonetheless, it is important to visit the dentist for cleanings and exams regardless of how long has passed since your most recent dental appointment.

Family Dentistry

Our team at Crosswater Dental is dedicated to helping every patient have an enjoyable, positive experience at the dentist‚ especially children! We understand the importance of building a positive, trusting relationship with children at a young age so they can maintain healthy smiles for life.

One of the ways we help your child feel more comfortable during their visit is by explaining any needed treatments in a simple, kid-friendly way. We also let them see the equipment we will use and even have them “assist” us during their visit. Helping your child learn how to keep their smile healthy and strong is one of our greatest goals.

Cosmetic Dentistry

Cosmetic dentistry can be used for subtle changes or major repairs. Cosmetic Dentistry is usually performed because of discoloration, chipped teeth, misshapen or missing teeth, or to repair gaps. The most common cosmetic dentistry procedures are bleaching, bonding, reshaping, and contouring. Sometimes dental crowns and veneers can also be considered cosmetic services. People that smoke or drink coffee may want to regularly get their teeth whitened to eliminate stains caused by their lifestyle choices. Even some people that take medication that discolors teeth may benefit from this procedure.

There are both social and health benefits to cosmetic dental procedures. They are sometimes used to fix oral problems, not just to look great. The social benefits of cosmetic dentistry include having whiter or more perfect teeth, which can boost your self-esteem. It can even boost your social life due to its ability to make your smile whiter and brighter. Additionally, many people get veneers to have straight teeth, but the health benefits can be combined with the social advantages. Not only do your teeth look better, but cosmetic dentistry can help correct a crooked bite which can reduce oral pain and even improve digestion. In some cases, straightening teeth with cosmetic dental procedures can balance your bite, which means less uneven wear and tear, reducing the pain in your mouth, and even in your head or neck. Uneven wear and tear can cause nighttime teeth grinding.

Whether you are just tired of suffering tooth pain or dental related-headaches, or you seriously just want a brighter smile, cosmetic dentistry may be the answer to all of your problems. The cost varies, depending on the severity of your oral issues and what you are looking to accomplish. While a simple teeth whitening procedure may be affordable and easily done, something more major, like getting a full set of veneers, can be more costly, but many insurance companies are now covering more cosmetic dental procedures because of their likelihood to prevent more serious issues down the road.

Dentures and Partial Dentures

A complete denture is a restoration method used to restore the smile and function of your mouth when all of the teeth in an arch have been lost or need to be pulled due to decay or disease. This custom denture is removable and may require adjustments over time to ensure proper fit.

A complete denture is a good option for a patient who does not want to undergo surgery and is missing all of their upper or lower teeth. This type of denture does move and should be replaced every 5 years. Since a complete denture is not fixed, at-home care is extremely important in keeping food from getting stuck underneath it.

Partial dentures are a natural-looking replacement for one or more missing teeth. This type of denture is either made entirely from acrylic or a combination of metal and acrylic. It can either be removable or partially attached to either crowns or clips. A partial denture is an option for someone who does not want invasive surgery. Implants are the best alternative for a partial denture because they offer patients a more permanent and esthetically pleasing solution to missing teeth.

Extractions & Preservation

A dental extraction is the removal of a tooth, generally because the tooth has significant decay or damage and cannot be saved. An extraction may also be recommended to make space in the mouth before receiving orthodontic treatment. If you had a tooth extraction due to decay or extensive damage, dental implants are the most common replacement option.

After getting a tooth extracted it is very important to follow the post-op instructions to avoid infection and allow the gums and jaw to properly heal. You should avoid smoking and chewing hard or tough foods. Some pain and swelling can be expected and you may experience some bleeding. Please call our practice if you experience any problems beyond what is normally expected after getting a tooth extracted.

Tooth Replacement

For a tooth with minor to moderate damage, our dentists may recommend a composite dental filling. Composite fillings can also be blended to match your natural tooth color, providing an aesthetic restoration.

Whether you’re missing one tooth or multiple teeth in a row, we may recommend a dental bridge to restore your smile. The dental bridge is anchored in place through the use of two dental crowns, which are custom made to fit your smile and are placed on the teeth or dental implants next to the space left by the missing tooth. These crowns hold the artificial tooth in place to restore your smile, ensuring that your restoration will not easily shift or come loose. It typically requires only two visits to our practice to complete the dental bridge. Dental bridges are extremely durable and designed to last for many years.

Have you lost one or more teeth throughout your mouth? Dental implants are permanent, stable tooth replacements that can be used to replace one or more teeth. The dental implant post, which is a screw made of titanium, is surgically placed into the jawbone at the site of the missing tooth. This replaces the missing tooth’s root and ensures that your dental restoration is stable. A period of healing is required to allow the bone to to bond with the biocompatible post. Following this healing period, one of our skilled dentists will place the dental implant restoration, or replacement tooth, which fits on top of the implant post. Depending on which teeth are missing and your personal dental needs, your implant restoration might be a dental crown, dental bridge, complete denture, or partial denture. Each dental implant restoration is custom made to fit your smile both comfortably and aesthetically.

Oral Appliances

An occlusal guard is often called a night guard or a bruxism guard. It protects against bruxism, which is the clenching or grinding of the teeth that happens primarily at night. Because the jaw puts an extreme amount of pressure per square inch on the teeth, grinding and clenching the jaw at night can result in damage to the teeth and painful symptoms of TMJ, or temporomandibular joint disorder. Occlusal guards can be custom-made by a dentist to fit a patient’s mouth exactly, or they can be purchased over the counter. While over-the-counter occlusal guards are less expensive than custom-crafted, they can have a negative impact on oral health if not used properly. Custom-fitted occlusal guards provide patients with better bruxism relief without the discomfort of ill-fitting plastic or metal parts that are one-size-fits-all. Occlusal guards can prevent jaw strain, fatigue, pain, and the chipping or breaking of teeth.

Oral Conscious Sedation

Oral conscious sedation is the use of oral medication in combination with nitrous oxide to achieve an appropriate level of relaxation so that you can calmly receive the dental care you need. Most states require board-certification, which involves additional training in dosage, monitoring and safety. The entire process is simple and comfortable.

Your doctor will advise you as to when you should take the medication (usually the night before your dental appointment). Accompanied by a responsible friend or family member, you’ll arrive at the dentist’s office more rested and relaxed. If needed, nitrous oxide will be given to further relax you during the appointment, and an experienced sedation dentistry team will monitor your vital signs during the procedure. Your friend or family member will accompany you home once your dental work is complete. The effects of the sedative should subside by the following day. It is wise to have a friend or relative stay with you until the medication wears off.

Although your dental procedures may take hours, you may feel as if they take only minutes. Some patients become so relaxed that they fall asleep in the dentist’s chair. Sedation medications have an amnesic effect, so you’ll have few, if any, memories of the visit.

Nitrous Oxide

Nitrous Oxide sedation, also known as “laughing gas” is commonly used to make treatment more comfortable. This sedation is inhaled through a mask that allows you to breathe in the medication and induces a state of relaxation. A local anesthetic will be administered in conjunction with nitrous oxide to eliminate pain. This technique is fast-acting and is also quick to dissipate so that an adult does not need an escort (and they are able to drive safely) within a few minutes after treatment. While this technique greatly relaxes the patient it will not generally cause them to sleep through a procedure.
